The Guide Every Indian Lifter Needs Before Buying

MEASURE ONCE.
TRAIN FOR LIFE.

A belt in the wrong size is worse than no belt at all. It either restricts your breathing before the lift, or it compresses without providing actual support. Getting sized right takes two minutes. Here is exactly how to do it.

Most lifters size their belt the same way they size their jeans. They look at their trouser size, they pick the corresponding belt size, and they wonder why it feels wrong. Trouser size and belly measurement are completely different numbers — and a powerlifting belt is worn at a different position on your body than trousers. This is mistake number one, and it sends hundreds of Indian lifters to the wrong size every year.

A powerlifting belt sits at your natural waist — at or just above your belly button. This is where your core generates the most intra-abdominal pressure during a squat or deadlift, and it is the measurement that determines your belt size. Not your trouser waist. Not your hip measurement. Your belly button circumference. Everything else that follows comes from this one number measured correctly.

The Only Measurement That Matters

What you need: A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string + ruler)
Where to measure: Around your natural waist at belly button height
How to stand: Relaxed — not sucked in, not pushed out
What to record: The measurement in centimetres

That number maps directly to your NBD belt size. Nothing else does.

The second thing to understand before buying is that leather belts are lifetime equipment. You are not buying a training accessory you will replace in a year. A properly sized NBD leather belt breaks in to the exact shape of your body over 3–6 weeks of training and lasts 10–15 years of serious use. Getting the size right at purchase is not just important — it is the entire point. Read our guide on how to use a lever belt correctly once your belt arrives.

"Bought a medium thinking that's my size. Should have measured. Exchanged for a large — completely different belt. Fits like it was made for me."

Quick Sizing Rules

Between sizes? Always go one size up.
Currently bulking? Factor in 5–8cm of gain — go up.
Measure twice before ordering — one measurement is not enough.
Trouser size ≠ belt size. Never use it.
Unsure? WhatsApp NBD before you order — we confirm your size.

The Method

HOW TO MEASURE FOR A POWERLIFTING BELT — STEP BY STEP

01

Get a Soft Measuring Tape

Use a cloth or flexible measuring tape — the kind used for clothing. If you don't have one, use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler afterwards. A rigid measuring tape gives inaccurate readings around the body.

02

Stand Naturally Relaxed

Do not suck in your stomach. Do not push it out. Stand how you normally stand — feet hip-width, arms relaxed at your sides. You are measuring your working waist, not your smallest possible waist.

03

Measure at Belly Button Height

Wrap the tape around your midsection at exactly belly button height. Keep it level all the way around — it should not dip at the back or ride up at the front. Snug contact with the skin, but not compressed.

04

Record the Number in CM

Note your measurement in centimetres. If the tape shows both cm and inches, use centimetres — the NBD size chart is in cm. Write it down. Measure a second time to confirm.

05

Match to the NBD Size Chart

Find your measurement in the chart below. If you land exactly on a boundary between two sizes — say your waist is exactly 90cm — go one size up. The belt should be snug but never painful, and you need room to brace into it.

06

Confirm via WhatsApp Before Ordering

If you are still unsure after measuring, message NBD on WhatsApp before placing your order. We have confirmed thousands of sizes and we will tell you exactly which size to order. No guesswork, no wrong deliveries.

Important — Read Before Ordering

Between sizes: Always order the larger size.

Exchange policy: NBD offers size exchanges within 7 days of delivery. Contact us on WhatsApp immediately if the size is not right.

One question comes up constantly: does the thickness of the belt — 10mm versus 13mm — affect which size you order? The answer is no. The size chart is identical for both. Thickness changes the stiffness and the break-in time, but the measurement around your waist is the same regardless of which belt you choose. You measure once and the result applies to any belt in the NBD range.

The only scenario where sizing feels different between 10mm and 13mm is during break-in. A 13mm belt is significantly stiffer when new, which can make it feel tighter than a 10mm of the same size for the first few weeks. This is normal and temporary — the leather softens and moulds to your torso within 3–6 weeks of regular training. Do not size up to compensate for stiffness. Size correctly and let the belt break in. Read about when to start using a lifting belt to time your first belt purchase correctly.

10mm vs 13mm — Sizing Impact

Same size chart: Both use belly button measurement — no difference.
13mm break-in: Feels stiffer for 3–6 weeks — this is normal.
10mm break-in: Softer from day one — faster to feel comfortable.
Do not size up because a 13mm feels stiff — it will break in.

If you are unsure which thickness suits your training, message NBD on WhatsApp before ordering. We have fitted 14,500+ lifters and will give you a direct recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

LIFTING BELT SIZE — EVERY QUESTION ANSWERED

Use a soft measuring tape and wrap it around your natural waist at belly button height. Stand relaxed — not sucked in. Record the measurement in centimetres and match it against the NBD size chart above. That is your size. Never use your trouser or pant size — it will give you the wrong belt.

Measure at belly button height and match to the chart: XS (60–70cm), S (70–80cm), M (80–90cm), L (90–100cm), XL (100–110cm), 2XL (110–120cm), 3XL (120–130cm), 4XL (130–140cm). Between sizes? Always go one size up. Still unsure? WhatsApp NBD before you order.

Always size up when between sizes. A belt slightly on the larger side of your range still provides full support and gives you room to brace properly. A belt too small restricts breathing and causes discomfort. The NBD lever can also be repositioned to fine-tune tightness after delivery — so there is some built-in flexibility.

The belt should be tight enough to brace against — not so tight you cannot breathe before a lift. Relaxed, you should be able to slide two fingers under it comfortably. When you take a big breath and push your belly out against it, it should feel locked and solid. If you feel light-headed or cannot breathe at all — it is too tight. If it moves freely during a set — it is too loose.

No. The size chart is identical for both thicknesses — your belly button measurement determines your size regardless of whether you choose 13mm or 10mm. The only difference you will notice is that a 13mm belt feels stiffer in the first weeks of break-in. This is the leather, not the size. Do not size up to compensate — let the belt break in to your body and it will mould perfectly.

Yes. NBD offers size exchanges within 7 days of delivery. Contact NBD immediately on WhatsApp if the size is not right. To avoid this entirely — measure twice at belly button height, use the chart above, and message NBD before ordering if you are unsure. We have confirmed thousands of sizes and will give you a direct answer.
