How to Wash an Acid Wash Tee Without Wrecking It

Wash an acid wash tee inside out, in cold water, with a mild detergent, then air dry it flat in the shade. Heat is what damages these shirts — not washing — so a washing machine is completely fine as long as the water stays cold and the dryer stays off.

That single sentence covers ninety per cent of it. The rest of this page explains why, because once you understand what an acid wash actually is, the rules stop being a list you have to memorise and start being obvious.

The routine, in five steps

1. Turn it inside out. Every time, without exception.
2. Cold water, gentle cycle. Machine or bucket, it makes no difference.
3. Mild detergent. No chlorine bleach, no whitening powders, no fabric softener.
4. Wash it separately for the first two or three washes. Loose surface dye can transfer.
5. Air dry flat, in shade. Never a dryer, never direct afternoon sun.

That is the whole routine. It takes no more effort than a normal wash — it just avoids the two things that actually cause damage.

What an acid wash actually is

An acid wash — sometimes called a mineral wash — is a finishing process applied to the garment after it has been dyed and sewn. The piece is tumbled with an oxidising agent that strips colour away unevenly, leaving the mottled, weathered surface that gives the shirt its character.

Two things follow from that, and both matter for how you look after it.

First, the shirt is already faded on purpose. The colour loss you can see is the finish, not damage. That is why "will it fade?" is the wrong question to ask about a garment like this.

Second, on the NBD apparel range the wash is applied to each garment separately, so the colour breaks unevenly and no two pieces come out identical. What you are protecting when you wash it carefully is that specific pattern — the one your shirt happens to have.

The fabric underneath is 100% combed cotton at 240 GSM. That is roughly a third heavier than a standard 160–180 GSM gym tee, which is why it hangs and holds its shape instead of clinging. Heavier cotton is more forgiving in the wash than a thin tee. It is not more forgiving of heat.

Heat is what kills the shirt

If you take one thing from this page, take this. Almost every problem people blame on washing is actually a heat problem.

Hot water relaxes cotton fibres and lets them contract — that is what shrinkage is. It also accelerates dye loss on a garment that has already been chemically stripped once.

A tumble dryer does the same thing, harder, and adds mechanical abrasion on top. On a printed panel it is the fastest way to get cracking at the edges of the print.

Direct sun is the one people forget. UV bleaches cotton, and it does it unevenly, so a shirt dried on a line in full afternoon sun can end up with a fade that has nothing to do with the acid wash and does not look like it either.

Cold water, no dryer, dry in shade. Three rules, one cause.

Inside out protects two things at once

Turning the shirt inside out is the highest-value thirty seconds in the whole process, because it protects the two surfaces that cannot be repaired.

The print stops rubbing against the drum and against the rest of the load. Prints on heavyweight cotton — like the full back panel on the DISCIPLINE tee — fail at the edges first, from abrasion, long before they fail in the middle.

The wash pattern stops taking the same abrasion. The mottled surface sits on the outside of the fabric. Scrub it against a zip or a pair of jeans for twenty cycles and you will wear a shine into it.

This is the same logic as breaking in stiff leather rather than forcing it — the same principle behind breaking in a lever belt properly. Gear that is built to last still has a right way and a wrong way to be handled early on.

Drying, ironing and folding

Dry it flat, not on a hanger. An oversized cut has a long body and a dropped shoulder, and wet heavyweight cotton is heavy. Hung wet, it stretches at the shoulders and the neckline, and that stretch does not come back out.

Never iron directly on the printed or washed surface. If the shirt genuinely needs pressing, turn it inside out and press the reverse, or put a cloth between the iron and the fabric. A hot plate straight onto a print is irreversible in about four seconds.

Fold it, do not hang it long term. Same reason as drying — the weight works against the shoulder seams over months.

What is normal, and what is a fault

Normal, and expected: the fabric softens over the first several washes. The hand-feel changes. Slight further variation in the wash pattern develops with wear. The shirt starts looking more like yours and less like a product photo. None of this is a defect, and none of it is reversible — which is the point.

Not normal: seams opening, print lifting in the middle of the panel rather than at the edges, a colour change that runs in a straight line or a hard edge. Those are manufacturing faults, not wear.

Can you machine wash an acid wash t-shirt?

Yes. Turn it inside out, select a cold, gentle cycle, and use a mild detergent with no bleach or softener. The machine itself is not the risk — hot water and the tumble dryer are. A cold machine wash is no harsher on an acid wash tee than washing it by hand.

Does an acid wash tee keep fading after you buy it?

The visible fade is the finish, applied deliberately before the shirt ever reached you, so it is not "fading" in the sense people mean. Further colour loss comes almost entirely from hot water, dryer heat and direct sunlight. Keep those three away and the pattern stays roughly as it arrived.

Will a 240 GSM heavyweight tee shrink?

Cotton shrinks when heat lets the fibres contract, and heavyweight cotton is not exempt. Washing cold and skipping the dryer is what prevents it. Treat any tee that has been through a hot wash and a hot dry as permanently a size smaller — that change cannot be undone.

Can you use fabric softener on a printed tee?

Avoid it. Softener works by depositing a coating across the fibres, and on a printed panel that coating sits between the print and the fabric it is bonded to. Over many washes it contributes to lifting at the print edges. A mild detergent alone is enough on cotton this heavy.

Why does every acid wash tee look slightly different?

Because the wash is applied to each garment on its own rather than to a roll of fabric. The oxidising agent strips colour unevenly by design, so the mottling lands differently every time. Two shirts from the same colourway and the same batch will not match, and that is the intended result.

How often should a gym t-shirt be washed?

After every training session. Sweat left in cotton breaks down fibres and sets odour that later washes struggle to remove — which is a far bigger threat to the shirt's lifespan than the wash cycle itself. Rinse it if a wash is not possible immediately, and never leave it balled up wet in a bag.
