Knee Sleeve Size Guide — Why Most Lifters Buy the Wrong Size
Share
Most knee sleeves that disappoint people were not badly made. They were badly sized.
This is the single most common mistake Indian lifters make when buying their first pair of powerlifting knee sleeves, and it is completely avoidable. Get the sizing wrong and even an excellent 7mm sleeve becomes an expensive knee warmer. Get it right and a mid-priced pair will outperform premium sleeves that someone else ordered a size too big.
How to Measure for Knee Sleeves
Two measurements, both taken standing up with the leg relaxed and straight:
- Kneecap circumference. Wrap a soft tape straight around the centre of your kneecap. Keep the tape level, not angled.
- Calf circumference. Measure around the thickest part of your calf.
Then match against the size chart on the product page and take the larger constraint of the two. Lifters with well-developed calves are often limited by the calf measurement rather than the knee, and that is normal.
Two mistakes that ruin the measurement
- Measuring with the knee bent. This inflates the circumference and pushes you a size too large. Leg straight, always.
- Flexing your quad while measuring. Same problem. Stay relaxed.
Do Not Size Up. Ever.
This is where the money gets wasted. A knee sleeve is a compression garment. Compression is the product. Everything you are buying it for — joint warmth, stability under load, rebound out of the bottom of a squat — comes from the sleeve gripping your leg tightly.
Size up for comfort and you get a sleeve that keeps your knee slightly warm and does nothing else. No support. No rebound. No reason to own it.
What a correct 7mm fit actually feels like: a genuine fight to pull on for the first three to five sessions. You will need to roll them up, work them over the knee, and briefly wonder whether you ordered wrong. Once on, they should feel firm and slightly restrictive when you bend the knee. That is the fit working. Neoprene relaxes marginally with use, so a pair that goes on easily on day one will be loose within a month.
If you are genuinely between two sizes, size down — provided your calf measurement allows it.
5mm or 7mm?
- 7mm — the powerlifting standard. Stiffer, warmer, real elastic rebound out of the hole. This is what you want if heavy squatting is the priority, and it is the maximum legal thickness for IPF competition.
- 5mm — thinner and more mobile. Better for mixed training, conditioning work, higher-rep sets and general gym use where you want warmth without the stiffness.
Being honest about this: if you squat twice a week at moderate loads and also run, cycle or do conditioning work, 5mm is the more useful purchase and it costs considerably less. Buy 7mm because you are chasing a squat number, not because it is the thicker option.
Sleeves or Wraps?
Knee sleeves are for training. Pull them on once, keep the joint warm and supported through every set of the session. This is what the overwhelming majority of lifters need.
Knee wraps are for peaking and meet day. Wound tight for one specific heavy attempt, then unwound between sets because you physically cannot leave them on. Maximum rebound, minimum comfort.
If this is your first piece of knee support, buy sleeves. Add wraps later if you start competing.
Care — This Is Where Sleeves Die
Hand wash only, cold water, mild soap, air dry away from direct heat. Never a washing machine, never a tumble dryer. High heat permanently kills neoprene's compression, and once it is gone it does not come back.
Also: do not leave them balled up damp in your gym bag between sessions. Turn them inside out and let them air. That single habit adds a year to a pair.
When to Replace Them
A well-cared-for 7mm pair lasts one to three years of consistent training. Replace them when they slide on with no resistance, when the neoprene feels soft rather than springy, or when the seams start separating. A sleeve that has lost its compression is not supporting anything, however new it looks.
The Short Version
- Measure around the centre of the kneecap, leg straight and relaxed. Measure your calf too.
- Take the larger constraint. Between sizes, size down.
- Choose 7mm for heavy squatting, 5mm for mixed training.
- Expect a real fight to get them on for the first few sessions.
- Hand wash cold, air dry, never any heat.
Get those five right and your sleeves will do the job they were built for.
